Your Toxic Exposures

One of the things that is new to many patients especially those who suffer from peripheral neuropathy and chronic pain is the effect that your toxic exposures can have.

For example, the average person is exposed to numerous chemicals everyday in our air, water, and even our food. Some of these substances may pass through the body harmlessly, yet others may linger in fatty tissues, creating a whole host of health problems. But this is tricky. With rare exception, most accumulations are slow or insidious. Exceptions could be exposure to large amounts of acute toxins, such as solvents.

Note these toxins can be anything from radon gas in the house to chemical pesticide residues on food, to antibiotic residues, which are now commonly present in water. Living healthily means you need to avoid as much toxic exposure from your environment and food as possible. So let’s talk about some of the most important things we can do.

Perhaps the most important source of toxins you can correct immediately is filtering your drinking water. We strongly recommend a pitcher or whole house type water filter with a carbon filter. Carbon filters can be very effective at removing many toxins. But the key to their effectiveness is to make sure that the filters are changed frequently and disposed of properly.

The next rule of thumb is, wherever possible, consume only unprocessed foods. Fruits and vegetables should be organically grown, or at least washed, wherever possible. If you grow anything around your home, do not use commercially available pesticides.

Third, minimize your exposure around the home. Start with cleaning out your garage and your cabinets, removing all toxic cleaners and chemicals. Most towns have hazardous waste disposal—make sure you participate.

Lastly, stop using commercial lawn products with pesticides and weedkillers. There are now great natural alternatives. We spend so much time around our homes, breathing the air, walking along the soil, and so do our pets. Be more careful here immediately. There are now many available products, which are far safer than traditional commercial products.

But don’t simply fall for the trap of “green”, environmentally safe”, etc; really read labels. Go to websites, learn, ask questions. If we all do this, we will create a far safer world for our children! So what if it’s not perfect? Just do better every day and you’ll be much better off.

Regardless, however, we do know that patients who become more involved in their own neuropathy and chronic pain treatment do far better, are far happier, and have a much better quality of life.

The reason for this is simple. We know beyond a shadow of a doubt that when people have a sense of control, and responsibility over their own direction, their neuropathy treatment outcomes are far better.

So, what are some of these simple things that you could be engaging in on a regular basis? Number one, of course, is to let go of habits that are hurting your health.

These include things like cigarette-smoking, eating too much, or eating the wrong things. This is why we spend so much time in our books and social media talking about diet and lifestyle.

Number two: you can become physically active if your current condition allows. You can, if you’re recovering from surgery or an accident. Simply getting up out of bed {with assistance) more often can make a big difference at the end of the day.

Take advantage of all the tools your doctors and therapists can provide, including wheelchairs, walkers and canes.

This is also the reason that virtually every neuropathy and chronic pain patient that visits our clinics receives their own set of tools in a unique homecare kit.

Do You Suffer from “Analysis Paralysis”?

While searching for answers or treatment, vow to do everything you can TODAY to improve the quality of your health and well-being without “Analysis Paralysis”.

If you are reading this, no doubt you understand how difficult chronic pain and frustrating a diagnosis of peripheral neuropathy can be. You probably know that many times it is impossible to identify precisely what causes a patient’s peripheral neuropathy. The same is true for many forms of chronic pain.

You should know this is very frustrating for your doctors as well. One of the things that’s the most frustrating for all of us is searching for a precise answer where none is liable to be found. Unfortunately, many cases of chronic pain including peripheral neuropathy are just like this.

So what happens is, both patients and clinicians will delay treating the patient. Now, sometimes this is a good idea— especially when it involves strong medications with powerful side effects and/or invasive tests or procedures. But what also happens is, while searching for a precise answer or treatment plan, constructive changes such as changes in health and behavior are neglected, and our patient’s suffering continues. This is “Analysis Paralysis”?

We suggest a better solution is to vow to do everything you possibly can to improve the quality of your health and well-being immediately. What we do know is that our behaviors have a profound impact upon the outcome of any disease, trauma, or health condition.

For example: could you become a little more fit, starting today? Are there other habits you have, like smoking cigarettes, or consuming too much alcohol, that you could change immediately? These could make a profound difference in how you feel a month from now. In fact, you may want to start with this free diet and lifestyle guide.

So, while it’s wonderful to have a single diagnosis, and all the answers, too often this is not possible.

This is why becoming more involved with your own health conditions goes a long way towards speeding you on your path back to health. But where do you begin? This is always the first question that patients pose.

Is My Treatment Actually Helping?

Is my treatment actually helping is a common question? The real measure of your treatment progress often times comes down to the examination skills of your doctor.

This is one of the questions we get quite often not only from patients but also from physicians and physical therapists who are new at treating patients with chronic pain and peripheral neuropathy.

It’s also very important to understand one of the basic concepts common to many patients with the most common types of pain is that laboratory and diagnostic tests are often completely normal. Sometimes, there are only very slight abnormalities which are misinterpreted or remain a point of confusion for both the doctor and the patient.

There are also tests like EMGs and nerve conduction studies, and sometimes even these are normal or nearly so. All of this makes accurately evaluating effective neuropathy and pain treatments a real specialty.

Let me share a secret with you. The real measure of your treatment progress often times comes down to the examination skills of your treating clinician. Even despite extensive technology, a good examination is still the most important element of getting great care!

Furthermore your doctor must have excellent record keeping systems so he or she can retrieve your information on a moments notice.

Some of the things that we check for are really quite simple. Things like your range of motion, sensation to touch, temperature, and vibration. Also your ability to walk on your heels and toes will be tested. All of these things can tell us so much about your progress.

Yes, sometimes you will need more diagnostic tests to confirm your progress. But, there is still no substitute for a very thorough initial examination as well as thorough and periodic follow-up examinations.

You should always feel completely comfortable with your doctor and her examination skills. If not, find somebody else. Ask questions but most especially ask what the answers to those questions mean. You have every right to expect honest answers.

Physical Activity and the Best Treatment

Much has been written about the effects of exercise and health in general. But what you may not know is there are good studies showing improvements in many health parameters with regular physical activity.

Not too long ago, the American College of Sports Medicine made the statement that adults should be very physically active seven days a week. Not unexpectedly, some in the popular media attacked this as ‘totally not doable by most adults’.

But the fact is, the more sedentary our lives become, the worse our health becomes. For example, we know that metabolism slows with as little as 90 minutes of continued sitting at your desk. As your metabolism slows, you become much more efficient at making fat than you do burning it.

And as a regular reader you know that poor metabolism can lead to the development of neuropathy, type II diabetes, or more serious illnesses.

So this means you can boost your metabolism with a workout at the gym or a stroll in the morning—and eat properly—but sitting all day without moving will negatively impact your health.

Typically, inactivity will make neuropathy and chronic pain worse. So what’s the solution?

In simple terms, it’s important to get as much physical activity as you possibly can. In times of illness, or recovering from surgery or accidents, this may simply mean getting from bed to bathroom more often. As recovery continues, it’s imperative that you push and move as much as possible.

For patients who suffer from peripheral neuropathy of the feet, using bicycles and similar low-impact equipment can be very beneficial.

But whatever you do, make sure you are doing it often enough! Even just five minutes an hour can really add up at the end of your day.

Not only will you feel better, but you will improve the chances of a better neuropathy and pain treatment outcome!

Your Symptoms and Cell Efficiency

One of the things we get asked all the time is, “What makes NeuropathyDR different?” This is a really good question. For anybody who suffers (or loves someone who does) from peripheral neuropathy or another form of chronic pain, it can be very frustrating to sort through all the details. Treating both your symptoms and cell efficiency is how we are able to provide good treatment based in science…but here is what you must realize first:

Significant improvement in the quality of life can happen by making a few simple changes in your diet and lifestyle and adding special combinations of good treatment.

Our background is in health care and nutrition. So, when I first began intensely treating pain & neuropathy patients in 2008, we knew that improving their underlying health—especially how nerve cells process energy—had to help improve many patients’ peripheral neuropathy and other forms of nerve damage or chronic pain. We are also living longer, as a byproduct of better infection control, better chemotherapy drugs, and surgeries.

The reason for this is, all of the things we have talked about today will affect how our body processes energy—leading to the development of peripheral neuropathy. Wherever possible, helping to restore energy efficiency to nerve cells can make a tremendous difference in many patients with peripheral neuropathy. And that is why our treatment program includes better nutrition and body motion—improving both your symptoms and cell efficiency by adding therapies such as neurostimulation, laser, and physical therapy, often with nutritional supplementation.

Think You May Have Neuropathy?

Think you may have neuropathy? One hundred million Americans suffer some form of chronic pain—and 25% of those suffer from some form of peripheral neuropathy (PN). Unfortunately, like so many disorders, PN is reaching epidemic proportions.

Why is that? Well, it looks like many forms are lifestyle-related. The most common cause is likely related to the increasing rates of obesity and poor fitness. But because there are many different causes, it is important to work with a healthcare professional that understands this, and tries to identify any possible causes early on.

The most important thing of all while searching for possible correctable causes is to embark upon a self-treatment program early on. This includes learning more about your own health and fitness.

I can’t emphasize enough the importance of maintaining proper body weight. Another immediate step you can take is limiting possible irritants and artificial sweeteners from your diet. Failing to take immediate action to help move your health in a positive direction is a big mistake.

Make every attempt to begin some non-drug therapies like nerve stimulation, laser, and physical therapy early on—even during the diagnostic process! The reason for this is quite simple: As we said, many patients search for answers, and all the while their health continues to deteriorate.Some care may dull the pain for a while. But, unfortunately, symptoms often return, with a vengeance.

Is LLLT Effective Pain & Neuropathy Treatment?

LLLT (Low Level Light Therapy) including LLLT and laser in human healthcare dates back to the space program of the 1990s. But is LLLT effective pain and neuropathy treatment? The answer is a resounding yes, IF great equipment and trained physicians are utilized.

According to SBIR/NASA, LED has been utilized as part of cancer treatment, especially for a complication called oral mucositis. LEDs have also been used for improved wound healing, as well as “speeding deconditioned personnel to full duty performance”. LED (Light Emitting Diode) usage has also been approved by the Naval special warfare command. 1

But how exactly does this work? Well, the scientific explanations are highly technical. But what has been known for centuries is that light speeds healing. Once upon a time, ill patients from infectious disease units and TB wards were rolled out into sunlight daily. Wounds that failed to heal were also exposed to sunlight.

From a simple perspective though, we know that light energy is simply clusters of photons or energy particles that can penetrate tissue at selected depths.

We also know that various wavelengths of light can then have specific effects. The most important effect that may have a bearing on peripheral neuropathy and related conditions is the ability to stimulate metabolism, or cellular efficiency.

You see, all the work we have done in the treatment of peripheral neuropathy since 2008 has been focused upon improving cell energy. This also of course includes diet, exercise and certain other compounds found in nature such as amino acids, carnitine, and lipoic acid.

A Clear Neuropathy and Pain Treatment Pathway

When confronted with a a disabling diagnosis, too often patients and even doctors don’t know that good neuropathy and pain treatment is available.

Instead, many patients self-medicate, which may dampen the most bothersome symptoms. But problems arise when this is the only neuropathy and pain treatment approach.

Beyond Conventional Neuropathy Treatment

Ask yourself if “conventional” neuropathy treatment alone is making you better?

First (you probably already know this), medicines alone have been the primary or conventional neuropathy treatment. There are a lot of medications used to treat neuropathy and nerve pain. Treatments are essentially the same no matter the cause. Most current drug treatments are directed at altering nerve, brain, and pain receptors.
