Our bodies are so dependent on hidden functions that we learn to take them for granted. The stomach or gut, as it is often called, is a hidden wonderland of protective mechanisms. What is Metabolic Syndrome and Why Should You Care?

Some people have never heard of metabolic syndrome. Although, you may know it by another name. Perhaps, you’re more familiar with the term pre-diabetes.

If so, then you know this is a precursor stage for the development of full-blown diabetes. That’s when your health can really start taking a turn for the worse. You may not know it immediately, but eventually, if left unaddressed at its root, diabetes will have detrimental effects on your body.

Metabolic syndrome is the “early” warning sign prior to the possible full blown development of diabetes. In fact, the development of neuropathy can occur sometimes 15 years or more before a diagnosis of diabetes occurs!

Developing a Better Self-Care Plan

If you’re reading this, you likely already understand that so much of getting better when faced with a serious health issue and especially neuropathy and chronic pain is a do-it-for yourself project. And you likely realize a better self care plan can be a BIG piece of the puzzle.

It is also unrealistic for any doctor to say or any patient to assume that his or her own self-care does not have a major impact on their health, and yes of course recovery from any illness.

Because so many people find the topic so overwhelming, what I suggest is that you start by making very simple list. This is step one of your better self care plan.

For example, do you have the more common known risk factors that can cause or aggravate your health problems? This includes things like cigarette smoking, being as little as 10 to 20 pounds overweight, being inactive or sedentary, and consuming too much alcohol?

Do you now have to take more medications because your diet has been so poor?

You see all of these things can aggravate most health issues especially when neuropathy and chronic pain become part of them.

Perhaps there are genetic or family issues, which you cannot change completely.

But could you do a better job of taking care of yourself?

Could you walk more, stretch every day at least once, take your advised supplements and follow a plant based diet plan, and watch the timing and composition of your meals?

Are you using the NDGen® or wearable laser treatment devices you bought from us?

Could you do a better job of working on your stress, your high blood pressure and migraines?

Are you regularly exercising, and taking “time-outs” every day for meditation or prayer?

You see where I am going. One of the most important things you can do right now is to make a better self care plan list for yourself. Share this only with yourself and your health care professionals.

And then, choose just one thing to work on today!

Rather than becoming overwhelmed, it is much more productive to focus on one change at a time. Once that change has been activated, move onto the next. And so on, one day at a time.

Best And Worst of At-Home Neuropathy Treatments

Better methods of controlling the pain and discomfort that peripheral neuropathy can bring are essential. By now you realize that there are a huge number of pills, potions, and gadgets etc… that are marketed to people who suffer from neuropathy and many other forms of chronic pain.

Many years ago when I became involved in the treatment of neuropathy and realized that this was inevitable due to the sheer number of people who suffer from peripheral neuropathy worldwide. And the huge numbers of patients is growing rapidly. Peripheral neuropathy now occurs in younger and younger ages.

Make no mistake about it this directly parallels our modern lifestyle and expanding waistlines. This of course is due to a high sugar, carbohydrate diets, and less physical activity.

In fact, the overall quality of diet and physical exercise for the vast majority of the population has deteriorated dramatically in the last 40 years.

All that said, doesn’t it make sense that these should be the primary targets of effective treatment?

Of course it does and even more so if you have the type of neuropathy that is directly related to obesity and poor fitness.

So why do these critical two components get ignored until it’s often too late?

This one is a combination of public health and healthcare professional education to be sure. The relentless push on you that all you need to do is to take this pill so that you feel better is an extreme disservice to both patients and their physicians alike.

But all neuropathy is not caused by lifestyle. Some are due to accidents, usage of certain medications, a side effect of surgery, genetics, or just bad luck.

All this means is that better methods of controlling the pain and discomfort that peripheral neuropathy can bring are essential.

The worst pain treatments are those that have no basis in science whatsoever; and there are plenty of them available. You only have to scan the aisles of your local pharmacies.

Employing other methods, which are researched and supported by science are our first choice both at home and in the clinic.

Disuse Syndrome

In our last post, we discussed how exercise can help control the symptoms of your underlying illness (whatever caused your autonomic neuropathy). Today we’re going to discuss the effects of not exercising, which are called disuse syndrome.

Use Vs. Disuse

When you’re thinking about starting an exercise program and you’re thinking about how dangerous it can be, you also need to consider the effects of not starting an exercise program.

The effects of not exercising are called disuse syndrome.  If your level of activity seriously out of sync with your level of inactivity, you can develop:

• Decreased physical work capacity

• Muscle atrophy

• Negative nitrogen and protein balance

• Cardiovascular deconditioning

• Pulmonary restrictions

• Depression

The effects of any of these symptoms of disuse syndrome in combination with your autonomic neuropathy symptoms can make a bad situation even worse.

The very nature of your autonomic neuropathy can affect the systems that are most sensitive to the effects of exercise.  Any exercise program you begin should be designed and monitored by a medical professional well versed in the effects of autonomic neuropathy, like your NeuropathyDR® clinician.

Autonomic neuropathy can have a serious effect on the very systems in the body that are directly affected by exercise.  Make sure you talk to your healthcare provider before you start an exercise program and let them monitor your progress.

Questioning The Status Quo

One of the things that we find very challenging, and gets in the way of patient progress many times, is the patient’s unwillingness to question the status quo.

Now, if you suffer from neuropathy or indeed many forms of chronic pain, spinal stenosis, fibromyalgia, etc. know that often times the only answers presented to you are drugs and more drugs.

By and large, our system does a terrible job of educating patients the impact that their lifestyles, diet, and fitness have on the progression and wherever possible reversal of their underlying diseases.

Question the status quo.

One of the fundamental reasons for this is that very little time in professional education is spent in these critical areas.

Furthermore, the constant barrage in all forms of media with drug-only solutions does tend to brainwash people. Also, it’s a sad fact that these tools are made available to patients with little or no cost out-of-pocket before potentially less harmful, less invasive alternatives.

Thanks to patients like you, however, all of this is changing.

Social networks like this continue to grow and bring alternative solutions to patients literally around the world.

Oftentimes though YOU need to carry this a step further when dealing with your healthcare professionals.

Ask more questions.

Be sure you fully engage your doctors and therapists!

You have every right to. After all, this is the only body you’ll ever get.

Talk neuropathy and pain treatment side effects. Talk risks versus benefits. Talk about trying alternative solutions FIRST!

Above all do something more every day to improve the quality of your health.

Overcome Anxiety and Depression with Good Neuropathy Treatment

One of the things that is perhaps universal among patients who suffer from chronic pain and neuropathy is the manifestation of both anxiety and depression. But good neuropathy treatment can go a long way towards helping patients overcome these feelings.

Unfortunately, these feelings often don’t receive the attention they deserve. What you may not know is that part of the development of anxiety and depression is the result of nervous system reactions. A solid neuropathy treatment plan often helps patients get back those feelings of well-being that can sometimes seem only a distant memory.

I’m firmly convinced that part of this development is simply sensitization of the nervous system to all the changes that peripheral neuropathy and chronic pain can bring. This is also why I am convinced EVERY neuropathy and chronic pain patient should own a home self-treatment kit as part of their neuropathy treatment plan.

These feelings of anxiety and depression are very common, and suffered by most neuropathy patients. But seldom are they talked about honestly and openly with family or clinicians.

Yes, quite frankly, this is a mistake.

There ARE a couple simple things you can do immediately that will help.

First of all, realize there’s often lots you can control about your health—and some things you can’t. Resign yourself to that fact once and for all. Meditate or pray on this one if need be, as it really helps! It’s one of the great paradoxes of life—however, once accepted as fact, it can make a tremendous difference in your level of mental health and well-being.

And for everything you can change, such as your diet, lifestyle, mental health habits, attitude, etc… accept one hundred percent responsibility right now! Each of these factors can make or break your neuropathy treatment plan!

Along these lines, there are several other things I suggest you explore to get the most out of your neuropathy treatment. Number one, make sure you have as simple and low stress a lifestyle as you possibly can.

I have seen many patients make extensive progress on the road back to health by simply practicing everything we’ve said in the last few paragraphs.

I have written extensively about designating enough “Me” time. It’s a mistake to neglect yourself above others—and this includes parents, relatives, and children.

Number two: with severe depression including thoughts of suicide, you need professional guidance immediately!

Ask for help, and make sure you get it. Today!

Where these are unavailable, a trusted friend, clergy member, or advisor may be the next best thing.

And as always, discuss the best neuropathy treatment options available to you with your treating clinician. The sooner you get on the road to wellness, the better you will find that you feel.

Above all, recognize you are not alone.

Be Your Own Best Neuropathy Advocate

“I’m not sure I have neuropathy, nor is my doctor…”

Unfortunately, this is something we hear all too often at our neuropathy and chronic pain clinic. This is why it is so important to get the knowledge out there in the hands of more competent and caring neuropathy treatment specialists. Being your own neuropathy advocate can also go a long way to ensuring you receive the treatment that you need to ease your symptoms and improve the quality of your life.

One of the worst things we can do for our symptoms is fail to try to treat the sleep disturbance and life disruption that oftentimes accompanies so many illnesses, including the various forms of peripheral neuropathy and chronic pain. This is where you can step in and become your own best neuropathy advocate.

Communicate with your providers. Some of our lifestyle choices, such as diet, exercise or lack thereof, alcohol consumption, can exacerbate our symptoms. Be honest with your providers about these issues. And ask them what treatment options are available to you.

At our clinic we strongly recommend drug therapy only as a second, not first, resort!

Common Sense Approach to Neuropathy Treatment

Would you hit a Fly with a Sledgehammer?

Of course not. It’s just common sense!

Then why are clinicians prescribing invasive methods of treatment for any condition before more simple and often times old fashioned common sense methods?

Why has so much about modern healthcare, for what were once relatively simple to manage conditions, become just like this?

One relatively recent example was highlighted by the deaths and serious infections due to contamination of steroids and drugs administered for back pain and spinal injections.

Of course I’m not saying these don’t have a place. They do.

What I have issue with is when invasive methods of treatment for any condition are prescribed before more simple and often times old fashioned common sense methods of management for spine pain including modified rest, exercise, traction, physical therapy, spinal manipulation, and noninvasive therapy modalities.

The same could also be said for many of the other conditions that we now treat with drugs instead of lifestyle and behaviors FIRST.  This includes GERD, minor depression, sleep disturbance, fibromyalgia, and other forms of chronic pain.

Furthermore, third-party payers and insurance companies do not help the situation because often reimbursement is provided for invasive and expensive procedures while these modalities are simply considered “not medically necessary”. There is no common sense in any of this!

I’m old enough to remember when this was never the case. Unfortunately, it’s also been very difficult to change. However there are some things you can do.

First of all, always inquire about inexpensive and noninvasive procedures when considering any healthcare choice. This is especially true in spine pain and peripheral neuropathy.

For example, too often patients with peripheral neuropathy are treated with expensive medications with significant side effects before exploring possible underlying causes that are easily correctable such as obesity and metabolic syndrome.

And very often patients tell us the side effects from the treatment with medications and invasive injections for pain are worse than the disorder itself!

But there are some things you can do, and one of them you’re doing right now.

And that is to learn everything you can to become your own health care advocate.

Now this is a situation that also has significant ties to politics and government, I’ll let you have those discussions on your own.
