Pain, Anxiety and Depression

One of the things that is perhaps universal amongst all who suffer from chronic pain and neuropathy is the manifestation of both anxiety and depression.

Unfortunately, neither pain, anxiety and depression receive the attention they often deserve. What you may not know is that part of the development of anxiety and depression is commonly the result of nervous system reactions. These feeings when attended to may actually protect us from further harm. These feelings are very common, and suffered by most neuropathy patients.

But seldom are they talked about honestly and openly with family or clinicians. Yes, quite frankly, this is a mistake.

There ARE a couple simple things you can do immediately that will help. First of all, realize there’s often lots you can control about your health—and some things you can’t. Resign yourself to that fact once and for all. Meditate or pray on this one if need be, as it really helps! It’s one of the great paradoxes of life—however, once accepted as fact, it can make a tremendous difference in your level of mental health and well-being.

And for everything you can change, such as your diet, lifestyle, mental health habits, attitude, et cetera: accept one hundred percent responsibility right now!

Along these lines, there are several other things I suggest to explore. Number one, make sure you have as simple and low stress a lifestyle as you possibly can. Be sure to discuss your feelings quickly, honsestly and openly with your partner, adult children or supportive friends in a position to help. Where these are unavailable, talk with your doctor first, then a trusted friend, clergy member, or social worker!

With severe depression including thoughts of suicide, you need professional guidance immediately! Ask for help, (Call 911) and make sure you get it NOW!

I have seen many patients make extensive progress on the road back to health by simply practicing everything we’ve said in the last three paragraphs.

I have also written extensively about designating enough “Me” time. *It’s a mistake to neglect yourself above others—and this includes parents, relatives, and children.

Above all, recognize you are not alone. I’m firmly convinced that so often sensitization of our nervous system to all the changes that peripheral neuropathy and chronic pain can bring commonly can result in anxiety and depression. Neuropathy, Pain and Foot Care

Maybe you are overweight, have diabetes or maybe you’ve completed a course of chemotherapy. Or if you suffer from pain or burning in your feet, legs or hands, you’re not alone. This may sound like a no-brainer but many people with diabetes don’t realize how toxic high blood sugar is. High blood sugar is what causes nerve pain and damage. Keeping blood sugar levels close to normal can not only stop ongoing damage; some damage may even be reversible. That provides even more promise for fighting neuropathy pain.

Take Exceptional Care of Your Feet

Nerve pain is usually what brings people in to see their doctors. But the numbness in their feet and inability to feel even the smallest injury can lead to infections and ulceration and ultimately end in amputation. If you suffer from peripheral neuropathy you need pain and foot care. Carefully inspect your feet every time you shower and be very aware of any sign of problems. Some things you can do are:

  • Clean and inspect your feet every day. If you have any irritation or wound that’s not healing properly, get medical care immediately.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. Don’t wear shoes that pinch your toes or rub blisters on your heels.
  • Wear padded socks to cushion the ball of your feet and the heel.
  • Either cut your toenails straight across or have a professional do it for you.

All of these things can go a long way to making your quality of life with neuropathy pain and foot care as good as it can be!

3 Pieces of Better Health

Can it really be this easy? Are there really just 3 pieces of better health? The answer is a resounding yes!

Too often, like so many things we tend to make health and even treatment of certain illnesses more complicated than they need to be. As a regular reader of our materials you understand some of this already but let’s try to put it all together today in a simple fashion.

The first piece of the 3 Pieces of Better Health, in fact the mainstay of better health and yes recovery from illness has got to be diet. A plant based Mediterranean type diet. This diet with very limited, to no animal products, plenty of healthy fats like olive and fish oil and little to no refined sugars is not only perhaps the healthiest diet but also quite likely the best for our brains and nervous systems or what we doctors call neuro-protective. There’s no question no matter where you are that physical activity is paramount to your wellness and recovery from any illness. In fact, simply start where you are! If you’re recovering from surgery for example, use that wheelchair or walker as much as you possibly can. If you are completely mobile, walk whenever you can and in fact avoid sitting for more than 20 minutes maximum any given time. Believe or not these deliberate but simple physical activities when done consistently during our day probably do more for blood flow and strength than any other single thing you can do throughout the day. This includes going to the gym in the morning and then sitting all day on the job or at home.

Finally, so much as the written about mindset and health. Make no mistake about it your attitude, your support system, your interaction with family and those you love go a long way towards ensuring you have this third but key piece of better health. And no it’s not without demanding your own needs are met. Add in daily meditation, regular thought provoking reading and simple downtime and you literally have a lifelong winning combination.

Physical Activity, Neuropathy and Chronic Pain Patients

While your pain may make any kind of physical activity the furthest thing from your mind, a good clinician can greatly increase your potential for rehabilitation. Your neuropathy does not have to be a life sentence.

Autonomic Neuropathy – When Neuropathy Changes Critical Body Functions

Autonomic Neuropathy: More Dangerous Than You Think

If you read our articles often, you know that we usually talk about peripheral neuropathy in terms of pain and inconvenience.  We usually write about quality of life, but it’s also important to know about a much more serious element: the dangers of autonomic neuropathy.

Autonomic neuropathy is the term that means damage has been done to the nerves that control the automatic functions of your body.  These functions include blood pressure, heart rate, bowel and bladder emptying, and digestion.  When the nerves are damaged, these functions can start to behave incorrectly.  It can be dangerous and even life-threatening when this happens.

If you have symptoms of nerve damage such as:

• Numbness or tingling
• Loss of motor control
• Sexual dysfunction
• Dizziness and sweating
• Loss of hot and cold sensation

You may also have more serious damage to the nerves controlling your organs.  If you think you might, see a NeuropathyDR® clinician right away!  Many cases of autonomic neuropathy accompany cases of peripheral neuropathy that have more easily-noticed symptoms.  With autonomic neuropathy, your body can have trouble controlling your blood pressure, might not digest food correctly, or could have problems regulating your body temperature.  These conditions are dangerous!

Your doctor will make sure you’re taken care of the best way possible.  For autonomic neuropathy, this can mean a couple of different treatments used together to keep you healthy.  Several kinds of medications are available which will help slow the effects of nerve damage and reduce the symptoms.

Your doctor will also instruct you on ways to make your everyday routine more conducive for living with neuropathy.  You may have to adjust your diet, and certain kinds of exercise may be more dangerous to people with neuropathy.  Don’t worry, though!  There are still lots of great foods you’ll be encouraged to eat, and you’ll be able to keep in shape the right way with the plan you and your NeuropathyDR® clinician develop together.
