Making Your Diet Count

Always remember, making your diet count goes a long way towards getting and feeling better!

In the past, I’ve talked about how simple a diet can—and should—be most of the time.

Would you rather be building your body with empty calories from highly refined foods—or from fresh, “live” foods such as vegetables, fruits, and so on?

Do you remember why we eat? It’s to provide fuel and “building blocks” so our bodies can function smoothly and repair themselves. Thinking very consciously about this really can help you change your old habits.

One of the biggest things I find that helps us is always having a powerful image of how we want to feel and function! Think about it. Would you rather be building your body with empty calories from highly refined foods—or from fresh, “live” foods such as vegetables, fruits, and so on?

In the case of pain, we are trying to stop or reduce “Inflammation”, the cause of much pain and suffering.

Neuropathy patients especially need to be able to repair their bodies better, maintain even blood sugar, and also provide things like magnesium and vitamins.

In most everyone, magnesium can help ease pain and restore better sleep. In our neuropathy diet, this would be from eating our leafy green vegetables, fruits and nuts. This is one nutrient almost everyone can benefit from supplementing with.

The B-Vitamins, especially, help our nerve cells work better. A key neuropathy vitamin is B1, or thiamine. This one is crucial in neuropathy and diabetes as it helps your body “burn” starches and sugars, commonly called “carbs”.

This you’ll get from eating nuts and lean proteins. Cereals are limited in the neuropathy diet, but small portions like a quarter cup (hint: always measure) can help your belly work better and help keep cholesterol levels in check.

One of my favorite ways to start the day is with ¼ cup gluten-free granola with almonds, then, add 1 tablespoon of soy or vegetable protein powder, and finally a splash of soy or almond milk. You’ll be keeping your carbs around 15-20 grams and be getting a head start on vitamins if you do this right.

A final word about supplements: always use under supervision and as we say repeatedly, don’t forget periodic blood tests.

Don’t Overlook Vitamin D Supplementation & Lifestyle Factors

Vitamin D is an absolutely essential nutrient that plays an important role in a healing neuropathy diet, not to mention multiple other types of disorders.

This vitamin has many key functions in your body. For one thing, it helps you maintain bone mass. Perhaps most importantly, Vitamin D allows you to build an immune system that can fight off invading diseases and restore order when your health has gone awry.

We may not even know everything there is to know about Vitamin D! New research continues to turn up additional ways that this vitamin is important for overall health as well as a vital part of a neuropathy diet.

Low levels of Vitamin D can really wreak havoc on your immune system. You’ll find that you get sick more easily with colds or the flu. You may also have global aches and pains that are hard to define or treat.

For your optimum health when battling neuropathic pain or discomfort, Vitamin D can be a significant part of a clinician-recommended neuropathy diet. That’s because Vitamin D helps your body manufacture certain substances, called neurotropins that exist to repair and regenerate damaged nerves.

You may be wondering how to determine an effective dose of Vitamin D. Unfortunately, experts don’t necessarily agree on this topic, especially in terms of world regions. Many European countries have a standard recommendation of several thousand international units (IUs) every day for adults.

In the U.S., doctors have often said that a good daily dose for adults is 600 IUs which for most of us is likely not nearly enough.

When I am helping a patient develop a customized neuropathy diet, I often recommend 2500 IUs or even more. That’s because the research shows that most people don’t get enough sunlight or enough natural food-based Vitamin D, so they need plenty of supplementation.

The best place to start is with a baseline check of your Vitamin D levels, so that you can work with your clinician to come up with the perfect dosage for your body’s needs. Most of all, be sure not to take TOO much Vitamin D without close monitoring—in very high doses, it can be toxic.

Key Trace Elements

Let’s talk at some length about key trace elements…

By definition, key trace elements are those essential nutrients, which are necessary for life and health but only in the tiniest amounts.

As with most nutrients, too much is not better. Neither is consuming large amounts of a single nutrient unless there is a genetic or other bona fide medical reason to do so.

So today let’s talk about the nutrient chromium. If you’ve ever seen stainless steel or shiny car parts, you probably know what chromium is. Just like copper and manganese, it is a metal. What you may not know is that most human beings in modern cultures probably get the majority of their chromium diet intake through cooking with stainless steel!

Part of this of course is because most people do not consume a diet that is naturally high in chromium.

The safest forms for human nutrition (trivalent) come from whole foods and are found in things such as broccoli (one of the highest sources) as well as coffee, potato and apple skins and nuts.

As we talk about all the time, having a large component of your diet from whole foods, which contain things like peels and skins provide some significant insurance against trace mineral deficiencies including chromium deficiency.

What you may not know however is, chromium appears to be essential for our bodies handling of blood sugar. In one particular form, that is GTF, which is short for glucose tolerance factor, this trace element may help to improve insulin (the hormone which lowers blood sugar) efficiency and potentiate insulin.

Now there is conflicting scientific evidence here, however enough research indicates that GTF is probably the safest supplement form and best included in supplementation in relatively low amounts on the order of not more than 100 µg per day.

In other words trivalent chromium helps us to process energy, particular carbohydrates and sugars from our food efficiently.

If you’ve read my other books you also understand that poor blood sugar control in the form of either diabetes or metabolic syndrome can cause peripheral neuropathy and a whole host of health disorders.

So by now the impact of chromium nutrition should be rather obvious. Without adequate amounts in our diet we are at risk for developing health risks related to blood sugar management yes and perhaps ultimately even peripheral neuropathy!

Reducing Holiday Stress

Reducing holiday stress can boost our enjoyment and physical health dramatically. Hands down, the holidays can be one of the most stressful events we encounter in our lives… and they come every year, just like clockwork!

That’s true for anyone, but it’s also true that people with neuropathy related to diabetes or chemotherapy cancer treatment may have higher stress levels than most. In this situation, without a strategic self-care plan in place, you may be feeling far from thankful or joyful. Holiday stress can also add a physical burden to your already overburdened body.

But there’s good news. Holiday stress can also be significantly reduced with just a little advance planning.

First, begin by understanding the physical toll that stress takes on your body’s systems. Whether it’s mentally or physically based, stress activates the release of hormones that tell your liver to create glucose, which can wreck your blood sugar levels if you’re diabetic. What’s more, people who are stressed and tired are more likely to ignore their glucose levels or stick to a diabetes-friendly diet.

The second strategy for reducing neuropathy aggravating stress during the holidays is to know yourself and what is most stressful for you. Do what you can to control and minimize your exposure to stressful situations. For example, if driving during rush hour frays your nerves, try to vary your route to work to avoid some of that traffic or leave home at a different time than usual. Or consider alternatives, such as public transportation or carpooling. If you hate to cook but feel obligated to provide a lavish Thanksgiving meal, think of a different way to accomplish the same goal, such as ordering an already prepared turkey or asking a family member to share the cooking responsibilities this year.

Third, it’s a great idea from a neuropathy treatment standpoint to teach yourself a couple of simple relaxation exercises now so that they are easily accessed in your memory when you really need them. Start by reconnecting with your breathing—not by trying to change the pattern of your breath, but simple noticing how it feels to breathe. Spend at least twenty seconds relaxing into your breathing pattern. Progressive relaxation, in which you tense the muscles of each part of your body and then relax them, can also be an effective way to deal with holiday stress.

Your Health and Vitamin B2

Let’s talk about your health and vitamin B2. Do know what a vitamin is? By definition, a vitamin is something our bodies can’t make on their own so we must get from our diet. These are also means vitamins are essential to life!
Deficiencies, poor absorption, or, sometimes just low vitamin levels due to diet and illnesses can make us feel just lousy. But sometimes they can make us sick—or even kill us!

Vitamin B2, also known as riboflavin, is a key player in neuropathy treatment too! This yellowish substance is easily destroyed by light. It’s found in leafy vegetables, almonds, beans and peas, organ meats, and mushrooms.  This is really important in neuropathy treatment, because B2 is a key co-factor.

Co-factors are non-protein chemicals that bind to or join up with larger molecules in the body to make them work. And in this case, the vitamin B2 co factors called FAD and FMN are responsible for a wide variety of key body functions. This is crucial universally but especially for neuropathy patients, because FAD and FMN help us burn or metabolize our food efficiently.

Although we need only a little every day, not getting enough, or not absorbing it due to intestinal issues can cause symptoms ranging from fatigue, to cracked scaly skin, and inflammation of the mouth and tongue.

In fact, one of the classic signs of deficiency is what’s called angular chelosis—where cracks appear at the corner of your mouth. This is critical to be aware of, because neuropathy can be associated with intestinal diseases, and things like colitis and alcohol abuse. Diabetes (so often part of neuropathy), heart disease, and taking some medications, including birth control pills, can raise the need for this key nutrient.

Higher doses of riboflavin are used to treat migraines and even some eye diseases. In neuropathy and pain treatment, we find B2 or riboflavin supplementation is often needed to provide maximum health benefits. Let’s Talk About Eating Smart

Let’s talk about eating smart. One of the things that most patients with neuropathy—and many patients with chronic pain—eating smart by keeping well-fueled and well-hydrated goes a long way towards possibly reducing symptoms and improving the quality of life! Now, the reasons for this are many, and paying better attention to basic body needs dramatically improves the function of our brain and nervous system and thus how we feel.

There are a couple of basic rules that serve most neuropathy and chronic pain patients very well.

First, let’s talk a little about water consumption. An easy rule of thumb is to consume one half your body weight in ounces during a 24-hour period. So if we weigh a hundred and eighty pounds, we should drink ninety ounces of water (or non-alcohol liquids) in a 24-hour period. Remember, coffee, tea, and alcohol can cause us to lose fluid more rapidly, so go easy here. Under no circumstances should diet or other soft drinks be consumed.

Next, the mainstay or proper fueling is eating every 2 to 3 hours maximum. Getting used to smaller meals, and adding low-carbohydrate snacks such as several nuts or one half of an apple or other low-carb fruit can help us feel much better. The reason for this is it helps us maintain normal blood sugar levels and helps us burn fat more efficiently. If you are NOT insulin dependent or on diabetes medication, intermittent fasting may actually be beneficial. Learn way more about diet with the ND Diet Plan.

Eating more frequently as long as it is low in carbs (except within an hour HEAVY exercise) makes us feel better—and helps fuel us much more efficiently.

Carb control is also what helps us fight things like diabetes and metabolic syndrome—that, as you already know, complicate many health problems and make neuropathy and pain worse.

Like everything, there are exceptions to these rules. For example, if you’re insulin-dependent, you need to match your insulin dosage against your carbohydrate consumption very carefully.

Likewise, if you suffer from kidney or heart disease, you may need to be more careful with fluid consumption. Always follow your doctor’s orders. Try these simple suggestions starting today, and see how much better you may feel within just a few days!

Your Best Self-Treatment

We know for a fact that your best self-treatment goes a long way towards help & recovery in peripheral neuropathy and chronic pain.

Let’s face it. As a clinician, one of the most amazing things I get to do is watch patients make extraordinary recoveries from devastating illnesses and injuries. So let’s talk about what experience tells is is your best self treatment.

When people have a sense of control, and responsibility over their own direction, their neuropathy treatment outcomes are far better.

Of course, some health problems are much more serious than others. Some require much more time and effort to recover. And, yes, sometimes recovery is impossible or incomplete.

Regardless, however, we do know that patients who become more involved in their own neuropathy and chronic pain treatment do far better, are far happier, and have a much better quality of life.

The reason for this is simple. We know beyond a shadow of a doubt that when people have a sense of control, and responsibility over their own direction, their neuropathy treatment outcomes are far better.

So, what are some of these simple things that you could be engaging in on a regular basis? Number one, of course, is to let go of habits that are hurting your health.

These include things like cigarette-smoking, eating too much, or eating the wrong things. This is why we spend so much time in our books and social media talking about diet and lifestyle.

Number two: you can become physically active if your current condition allows. You can, if you’re recovering from surgery or an accident. Simply getting up out of bed {with assistance) more often can make a big difference at the end of the day.

Take advantage of all the tools your doctors and therapists can provide, including wheelchairs, walkers and canes.

This is also the reason that virtually every neuropathy and chronic pain patient that visits our clinics receives their own set of tools in a unique homecare kit.

We know for a fact that better, daily self-treatment goes a long way towards helping patients manage and wherever possible recover from peripheral neuropathy and chronic pain.

Last, but just as importantly, is to continually keep a good eye on your outlook and your attitude.

Fibromyalgia or Neuropathy?

In both fibromyalgia and in neuropathy, patients often experience tingling, numbness, and significant amounts of pain. This is not at all surprising, since recent research suggests that many fibromyalgia patients actually have small-fiber neuropathy.

We have long suspected this, however, since one of our observations many years ago was that many fibromyalgia patients respond very well to our neuropathy treatment programs, with some specific modifications. “Shot Gunning” is a term applied in medicine when multiple therapies are used all at the same time. In pain neuropathy and pain treatment this can sometimes create additional problems.

Simple Steps to Better Foot Care

As you probably know, peripheral neuropathy most commonly afflicts the feet first. And most adults suffer from some type of foot problem as well. But there really are some simple steps to better foot care you can begin to do today!

How well do you take care of your feet?

Initially, better foot care comes something as a shock to most patients. Too many of us ignore our feet until we have a painful or debilitating disorder like neuropathy.

You see, foot pain and neuropathy is much more than pain, tingling and numbness.

Often times there are changes in sensation which affect your balance and your ability to walk normally. Commonly, the shape of your feet will change due to muscle weakness over time or after an injury. This why some of the orthotics you see above can be so very helpful.

There are also changes in skin texture. Patients with peripheral neuropathy and foot pain often find their feet become cold. Cracking of the skin becomes more common. Unfortunately, infections like toenail fungus can happen too. Foot ulcers can be devastating and lead to amputation or worse.

So let’s talk about some of the simple things that you can do on a daily basis to help proper foot care.

The first thing you can do is to make sure that your shoes fit properly. Do not ignore things such as overgrown toenails, which can affect proper shoe fit. If you’re diabetic, your nails should be professionally trimmed by a podiatrist at least once per month.

Next, consider using either light wool, silk or microfiber socks. These socks do not trap moisture, which can make infections and perspiration problems worse.

Finally, be very careful in your choice of bath and shower soaps. Be sure to thoroughly dry and visually inspect the tops and bottoms of your feet every day! There are natural products such as those containing Tea tree oil, which are beneficial in helping prevent athlete’s foot and common fungal infections.
