Vitamin D is a key nutrient, responsible for many essential functions in human body. Yes, and this essential vitamin has a role in many other disorders too.

What’s the Connection?

Perhaps the most significant functions are maintenance of bone mass and a powerful immune system. The more recent research suggests many additional roles for this key nutrient. We now know that when Vitamin D levels are low, widespread aches and pains plus more illnesses like flus and colds are common.

Yes, and maybe even neuropathy, both directly and indirectly.

Regarding infections, many researchers now suggest we should be more commonly using vitamin D as part of our treatment plans for patients.

The neuropathy Vitamin D connection probably is because Vitamin D is necessary for the body to manufacture some key neurotropic factors.

Neurotropins as they are often called are substances produced by the body to help nerves repair, and whenever possible regenerate.

There are a number different things that can influence your own neurotropin production, including key nutrition components and therapies like low-frequency nerve stimulation.

So how much vitamin D is enough?

Well, United States says around 600 international units per day is fine, but European countries recommend levels much higher, on the order of a few thousand international units per day for most healthy adults.

So who is correct? I would definitely side with Europeans on this because research supports that most people do not get nearly enough vitamin D either from their diet, or sunlight exposure.

Personally, I recommend a minimum of 2500 units of supplemental Vitamin D per day combined with The NeuropathyDR Diet.

There are unfortunately no good plant sources of active vitamin D. (cholecaliferol).

The best dietary sources of vitamin D come from fish and fish oils.

But the most important advice I will leave you with today is to have your baseline levels of vitamin D checked, you and your healthcare providers must then determine the most optimum dosage for YOU!

Retest after the first 90 days to make sure your body is absorbing this key neuropathy nutrient properly.

You also need to be very careful because vitamin D can be toxic in very large amounts.

Vanadium, Pain and Illness Connections?

This could possibly be a connection between vanadium #neuropathy #diabetes #fibromyalgia and other forms of chronic pain.

Last time, we spoke about the role of trace elements in health and nutrition.

By definition, trace elements are those necessary for life and growth however, only in the tiniest amounts.

Vanadium and Boron are two more ultra trace elements we should talk about.

In some studies the element Boron has been found to help reduce the loss of calcium in our bodies. Therefore, it may actually have a positive and protective role in bone density maintenance.

In most situations, boron is relatively nontoxic in the forms most consumed by people. Boric acid for example has long been used as a preparation in health care with very rare adverse incidents.

Vanadium, another ultra trace element seems to have a role in potentiating the activities of insulin and blood sugar control. This of course could possibly be part of the connection between vanadium, neuropathy, diabetes, fibromyalgia and other forms of chronic pain.

I will caution you however, never to self-treat with vanadium supplements alone. To do so could be very dangerous!

Like everything, however you will find individual supplements and claims made for so many individual nutrients. Boron and vanadium are no exception. Be very careful here.

If you consume a diet that is high in vegetables, seeds nuts and the lean proteins, a deficiency of trace elements is extremely rare. Although, not impossible, there are variations in the quality of food based upon such things as the soils in which they are grown and the regions they come from.

Also, if you are supplementing your diet as we recommend, trace elements in very tiny absorbable forms are included.

Rarely should they be prescribed alone and in our opinion, always under close medical supervision.

Because everybody is different, in rare situations deficiencies of these elements can cause significant health issues. There are different tests available.

This is another reason why it is difficult to diagnose conditions, trace element analysis by hair and urine are often very helpful.

Once again, you can see the need for working with a healthcare professional who is trained in managing your neuropathy and chronic pain. Look at all possible facets, dig deeper for answers whenever necessary.

Key Trace Elements

Let’s talk at some length about key trace elements…

By definition, key trace elements are those essential nutrients, which are necessary for life and health but only in the tiniest amounts.

As with most nutrients, too much is not better. Neither is consuming large amounts of a single nutrient unless there is a genetic or other bona fide medical reason to do so.

So today let’s talk about the nutrient chromium. If you’ve ever seen stainless steel or shiny car parts, you probably know what chromium is. Just like copper and manganese, it is a metal. What you may not know is that most human beings in modern cultures probably get the majority of their chromium diet intake through cooking with stainless steel!

Part of this of course is because most people do not consume a diet that is naturally high in chromium.

The safest forms for human nutrition (trivalent) come from whole foods and are found in things such as broccoli (one of the highest sources) as well as coffee, potato and apple skins and nuts.

As we talk about all the time, having a large component of your diet from whole foods, which contain things like peels and skins provide some significant insurance against trace mineral deficiencies including chromium deficiency.

What you may not know however is, chromium appears to be essential for our bodies handling of blood sugar. In one particular form, that is GTF, which is short for glucose tolerance factor, this trace element may help to improve insulin (the hormone which lowers blood sugar) efficiency and potentiate insulin.

Now there is conflicting scientific evidence here, however enough research indicates that GTF is probably the safest supplement form and best included in supplementation in relatively low amounts on the order of not more than 100 µg per day.

In other words trivalent chromium helps us to process energy, particular carbohydrates and sugars from our food efficiently.

If you’ve read my other books you also understand that poor blood sugar control in the form of either diabetes or metabolic syndrome can cause peripheral neuropathy and a whole host of health disorders.

So by now the impact of chromium nutrition should be rather obvious. Without adequate amounts in our diet we are at risk for developing health risks related to blood sugar management yes and perhaps ultimately even peripheral neuropathy!

Let’s Talk About Vitamin B7 or Biotin Deficiency

Biotin deficiency tends to show as a skin rash, as well as fatigue, depression, and even as peripheral neuropathy-like symptoms.

Biotin is one of those nutrients that are not commonly known any longer as a vitamin. In the so-called “normal” healthy population, real deficiencies are rare because our normal intestinal bacteria can manufacture large amounts of biotin. There are, however, some things in common with biotin and the other vitamins.

Portrait of a doctorBiotin is another of those vitamins commonly added to cosmetics in products for hair, nails and skin. Unfortunately, the real hard evidence supporting such usage appears to be relatively slim.

Primarily, biotin deficiency like other B-vitamin deficiencies, tends to show as a skin rash, as well as fatigue, depression, as well as peripheral neuropathy-like symptoms.

Biotin deficiency can affect hair and skin health; such is the rationale for adding biotin to personal care products. This may be more severe in diabetics and alcoholics.

In diabetes, it may actually be that the need for biotin is greater than average. We also know that when diabetic patients are given biotin supplementation, along with the other B-vitamins, blood lipid and sugar profiles can improve.

Biotin is largely available in a wide variety of foods. But unlike some other nutrients we have recently discussed, biotin is present only in very small amounts. If you follow the NeuropathyDR Diet, it will be very hard to be deficient in biotin. This is especially true if you follow our advice with regard to frequent leafy green and other vegetable consumption.

There are, of course, exceptions. If you have been on long-term antibiotics, which can kill normal intestinal bacteria, you could be at risk for a biotin deficiency.

Some genetic disorders means certain patients need higher amounts of biotin than others.

Lastly, intestinal surgery and gastric bypass procedures affect absorption of many vitamins. Biotin is no exception.

Eggs and swiss chard are said to contain the highest amount of biotin foods. Raw eggs are not a good food source; cooked ones actually contains fair amounts of available biotin. Because of the danger of salmonella, we don’t recommend raw egg consumption anyway.

So you can see again that, like in so much of good nutrition, a wide variety of foods are really key to helping prevent deficiencies, low intakes, and the health problems they can cause–including peripheral neuropathy!

About Vitamin B3

Vitamin B3, or niacin, is a nutrient that, like all vitamins, is essential to health, life and just feeling great! Vitamin B3 helps our bodies convert food into energy, burn fat properly, and is largely responsible for helping us feel energized!

Did you know that vitamin B3 is a common ingredient in *energy drinks?

The reason for this is simple. Without vitamin B3, or niacin, our body is unable to function. For many patients, it is lacking due to poor diet. Consuming a diet high in processed foods is likely to be low in niacin. Consuming alcohol can also lower vitamin B3 levels too.

In the neuropathy clinic, mild deficiencies of niacin are probably relatively common. Frank niacin deficiency can cause the disease called pellagra. Pellagra is disease characterized by the three D’s: diarrhea, dermatitis, and dementia.

In very severe niacin deficiencies, significant changes occur to the nervous system.

These changes can show up as psychiatric symptoms and, as we mentioned earlier, dementia or brain disease. More commonly, especially in modern society, are lower levels of niacin then are optimal, possibly making worse some very common conditions, including high cholesterol and metabolic syndrome.

A proper diet should include a good food sources of niacin. Many nuts are also high in niacin. Avocado and shiitake mushrooms are also high in niacin. Vitamin B3 as niacinamide is also a common ingredient in many multivitamins and other dietary supplements.

Since niacin is available in two different common forms (niacin and niacinamide), we recommend often advise patients to consume both forms in small amounts. The reason for this is they will tend to act somewhat differently, both having beneficial effects.

Measuring vitamin B3 levels requires a little more work than a simple blood test. Blood tests for niacin are often unreliable, so special urine tests need to be performed.

Like so many nutrients, it is important to remember that diet must be the number one method of obtaining proper nutrition. It is also critical to understand that each nutrient is just like a key instrument in a symphony.

And just like a symphony does not work when one instrument does not play properly, the same is true in nutrition–especially in pain & neuropathy nutrition!

Your Health and Vitamin B2

Let’s talk about your health and vitamin B2. Do know what a vitamin is? By definition, a vitamin is something our bodies can’t make on their own so we must get from our diet. These are also means vitamins are essential to life!
Deficiencies, poor absorption, or, sometimes just low vitamin levels due to diet and illnesses can make us feel just lousy. But sometimes they can make us sick—or even kill us!

Vitamin B2, also known as riboflavin, is a key player in neuropathy treatment too! This yellowish substance is easily destroyed by light. It’s found in leafy vegetables, almonds, beans and peas, organ meats, and mushrooms.  This is really important in neuropathy treatment, because B2 is a key co-factor.

Co-factors are non-protein chemicals that bind to or join up with larger molecules in the body to make them work. And in this case, the vitamin B2 co factors called FAD and FMN are responsible for a wide variety of key body functions. This is crucial universally but especially for neuropathy patients, because FAD and FMN help us burn or metabolize our food efficiently.

Although we need only a little every day, not getting enough, or not absorbing it due to intestinal issues can cause symptoms ranging from fatigue, to cracked scaly skin, and inflammation of the mouth and tongue.

In fact, one of the classic signs of deficiency is what’s called angular chelosis—where cracks appear at the corner of your mouth. This is critical to be aware of, because neuropathy can be associated with intestinal diseases, and things like colitis and alcohol abuse. Diabetes (so often part of neuropathy), heart disease, and taking some medications, including birth control pills, can raise the need for this key nutrient.

Higher doses of riboflavin are used to treat migraines and even some eye diseases. In neuropathy and pain treatment, we find B2 or riboflavin supplementation is often needed to provide maximum health benefits. About Thiamine or Vitamin B1

Vitamin B1, or thiamine, is an essential nutrient. By essential nutrient, we simply mean that if we don’t consume it, as human beings, we can die. This frequently happens in alcohol abuse where it can lead to serious brain injury. In fact, Beriberi is a disease caused by thiamine deficiency. Fortunately, this is now quite rare in modern societies. It can, however, still be seen in certain parts of the world.

Beyond this, what’s most important to the neuropathy patient is the role B1 has in our health. One of the key things B1 does is help our cells, especially nerve cells, produce energy—and produce it more efficiently. Unfortunately, many people still do not get enough essential nutrients due to poor diet.

Typically, a poor diet is very high in sugar, as well as carbohydrates. Carbohydrates require thiamine to be metabolized (or readily used up), and high-carbohydrate diets can cause depletion. Milder forms of deficiency are still one of the most common causes of just feeling “blah”.

One of the things that is been particularly important in our neuropathy and pain treatment result is that certain forms of thiamine, most especially allithiamine, which is naturally occurring in crushed garlic, can have a profound effect on nerve cell function. Our pharmacists have compounded a special topical form called NDReGen Creme that we find very helpful in the pain of shingles, neuropathy and sometimes CRPS (Complex Regional; Pain Syndrome).

Some of the best natural sources of B1 include foods like asparagus, kale, cauliflower, and even oranges. Sunflower seeds and whole-grain rye are also good sources.

But one of the biggest mistakes too many patients make is to think that one single nutrient can heal us. This is only true in pure single nutrient deficiencies. Wouldn’t life be wonderful if it was that simple? This is why neuropathy and pain patients need to be very careful about which treatments and, especially which neuropathy treatment professionals they ask for help.

Sometimes, supplementing with vitamin B1 can be dangerous. If you suffer from cancer or certain other diseases, taking supplemental B1 in any form can create serious problems.

This is why it’s essential that you work with your physicians and continue to stay a well-informed patient.

Let’s Talk About Eating Smart

Let’s talk about eating smart. One of the things that most patients with neuropathy—and many patients with chronic pain—eating smart by keeping well-fueled and well-hydrated goes a long way towards possibly reducing symptoms and improving the quality of life! Now, the reasons for this are many, and paying better attention to basic body needs dramatically improves the function of our brain and nervous system and thus how we feel.

There are a couple of basic rules that serve most neuropathy and chronic pain patients very well.

First, let’s talk a little about water consumption. An easy rule of thumb is to consume one half your body weight in ounces during a 24-hour period. So if we weigh a hundred and eighty pounds, we should drink ninety ounces of water (or non-alcohol liquids) in a 24-hour period. Remember, coffee, tea, and alcohol can cause us to lose fluid more rapidly, so go easy here. Under no circumstances should diet or other soft drinks be consumed.

Next, the mainstay or proper fueling is eating every 2 to 3 hours maximum. Getting used to smaller meals, and adding low-carbohydrate snacks such as several nuts or one half of an apple or other low-carb fruit can help us feel much better. The reason for this is it helps us maintain normal blood sugar levels and helps us burn fat more efficiently. If you are NOT insulin dependent or on diabetes medication, intermittent fasting may actually be beneficial. Learn way more about diet with the ND Diet Plan.

Eating more frequently as long as it is low in carbs (except within an hour HEAVY exercise) makes us feel better—and helps fuel us much more efficiently.

Carb control is also what helps us fight things like diabetes and metabolic syndrome—that, as you already know, complicate many health problems and make neuropathy and pain worse.

Like everything, there are exceptions to these rules. For example, if you’re insulin-dependent, you need to match your insulin dosage against your carbohydrate consumption very carefully.

Likewise, if you suffer from kidney or heart disease, you may need to be more careful with fluid consumption. Always follow your doctor’s orders. Try these simple suggestions starting today, and see how much better you may feel within just a few days!

Let’s Talk About Better Home Care You Can Use Today!

Move As Much As Possible! You don’t have to run a marathon, or even walk one. You don’t have to race a titanium frame bicycle. Just move the big muscles in your legs as often and as much as you possibly can. Exercise, even very gently at first, improves circulation. Improved blood flow to the legs and feet will help nourish damaged nerves.

A Warm Bath Can Do Wonders

Warm baths increase blood flow; reduce stress and aid in relaxation. All three of these benefits will make the pain a little easier to tolerate. But a word to the wise, check the water temperature with your elbow or your wrist before you get in the bathtub. The nerve damage in your feet makes them an unreliable source for judging temperature. Use a thermometer. We like 100 degrees Fahrenheit with some added minerals like Epsom salts (don’t be stingy) and antioxidants.

Take Targeted Supplements

Vitamins B-1, B-12, B-6 and folic acid are all vital to healthy nerves. We have found certain combinations in professionally tailored packages for each case often works best. If you have nerve damage, that’s a chance you don’t need to take.  Don’t drink more than four alcoholic beverages a week (if you suffer from peripheral neuropathy; none would be even better).

Virtually everything has some side effects, so make sure that what you’re planning to take won’t cause you more harm than good. *You can easily check for drug-nutrient interactions online. And Above All Else…

Don’t give up.  Self-care is vital to managing your pain or neuropathy.  While you may need a combination of these self-care tips and medication, sorting out yourself is not always wise. All it takes is a phone call to meet with the doctor that knows your case the best.

Treating Diabetic Neuropathy

One of the most difficult and frustrating things doctors and patients do together is treating diabetic neuropathy As you probably know, diabetes as well as #diabeticneuropathy, is on the rise. The reasons for this are many however it is widely agreed the most common cause is sugar and carbohydrate intake and the accompanying increase in BMI or body mass index otherwise known as weight gain.

Unfortunately, this is one neuropathy problem, especially in the early stages that is not treated aggressively enough. Too many patients are simply told to “lose a little weight”, get more exercise etc. without any meaningful specifics.

Worse yet, very common hospital-based diabetic nutrition programs are still far too high in carbohydrates, as are some very famous diet programs.This also includes some programs still prescribed by nutritionists who treat diabetics. In our opinion, this has perpetuated problems with weight control in diabetes.

We also see people eating so-called healthy diets, which are loaded with natural “sugars”. This commonly includes diets rich in fruits and grains. The most important thing to realize in the treatment of diabetes and its cousin metabolic syndrome is that carbohydrates in your diet must be significantly controlled.

This means that carbohydrates need to be restricted to approximately 15g-20g per meal or snack unless you are on insulin*. This often means no more than a half a slice of bread per meal with no other carbs, minimizing starchy vegetables, and eliminating sugars. The ONLY times to add more without going crazy is if you will be engaging in HEAVY exercise within the hour.

Now this also means you will need to work with your doctors and nurses to adjust your medication dosages, especially, if you are insulin-dependent. *Do not make these suggested changes without your doctor’s knowledge or consent.

Getting very strict about carbohydrate control and realizing that conventional nutrition approaches may not be enough to manage your weight, #diabetes, but most especially your chronic pain & neuropathy goes a long way towards helping you regain control of your health, and thus your life.
