Your Symptoms and Cell Efficiency

One of the things we get asked all the time is, “What makes NeuropathyDR different?” This is a really good question. For anybody who suffers (or loves someone who does) from peripheral neuropathy or another form of chronic pain, it can be very frustrating to sort through all the details. Treating both your symptoms and cell efficiency is how we are able to provide good treatment based in science…but here is what you must realize first:

Significant improvement in the quality of life can happen by making a few simple changes in your diet and lifestyle and adding special combinations of good treatment.

Our background is in health care and nutrition. So, when I first began intensely treating pain & neuropathy patients in 2008, we knew that improving their underlying health—especially how nerve cells process energy—had to help improve many patients’ peripheral neuropathy and other forms of nerve damage or chronic pain. Of course, there are some patients we cannot help. But we do find that even in patients with genetic neuropathies or other extremely difficult-to-treat cases, significant improvement in the quality of life can happen by making a few simple changes and adding special combinations of good neuropathy treatments.

Your nervous system is made up of billions of cells called neurons. Neurons are highly sensitive to their own environmental changes; things like long-term oxygen starvation due to cigarette smoking, or carrying around too much body weight for too long. Our society is now developing diabetes at alarming rate, in younger and younger age groups. This is largely due to poor food and lifestyle choices. We are also living longer, as a byproduct of better infection control, better chemotherapy drugs, and surgeries.

These things all bring with them increased chances for developing chronic and painful conditions such as peripheral neuropathy. The reason for this is, all of the things we have talked about today will affect how our body processes energy—leading to the development of peripheral neuropathy. Wherever possible, helping to restore energy efficiency to nerve cells can make a tremendous difference in many patients with peripheral neuropathy. And that is why our treatment program includes better nutrition and body motion—improving both your symptoms and cell efficiency by adding therapies such as neurostimulation, laser, and physical therapy, often with nutritional supplementation.

Think You May Have Neuropathy?

Think you may have neuropathy? One hundred million Americans suffer some form of chronic pain—and 25% of those suffer from some form of peripheral neuropathy (PN). Unfortunately, like so many disorders, PN is reaching epidemic proportions.

Why is that? Well, it looks like many forms are lifestyle-related. The most common cause is likely related to the increasing rates of obesity and poor fitness. But because there are many different causes, it is important to work with a healthcare professional that understands this, and tries to identify any possible causes early on.

The most important thing of all while searching for possible correctable causes is to embark upon a self-treatment program early on. This includes learning more about your own health and fitness.

I can’t emphasize enough the importance of maintaining proper body weight. Another immediate step you can take is limiting possible irritants and artificial sweeteners from your diet. Failing to take immediate action to help move your health in a positive direction is a big mistake.

Make every attempt to begin some non-drug therapies like nerve stimulation, laser, and physical therapy early on—even during the diagnostic process! The reason for this is quite simple: As we said, many patients search for answers, and all the while their health continues to deteriorate. Some care may dull the pain for a while. But, unfortunately, symptoms often return, with a vengeance.

Don’t let this be you. Please steer clear of the magic Google “cure” or  latest “Nerve Formula” on Facebook. Only an accurate diagnosis is the clearest pathway toward the best available treatment.

Please remember we are always here to help with a proper work-up and treatment.

Is LLLT Effective Pain & Neuropathy Treatment?

LLLT (Low Level Light Therapy) including LLLT and laser in human healthcare dates back to the space program of the 1990s. But is LLLT effective pain and neuropathy treatment? The answer is a resounding yes, IF great equipment and trained physicians are utilized.

According to SBIR/NASA, LED has been utilized as part of cancer treatment, especially for a complication called oral mucositis. LEDs have also been used for improved wound healing, as well as “speeding deconditioned personnel to full duty performance”. LED (Light Emitting Diode) usage has also been approved by the Naval special warfare command. 1

But how exactly does this work? Well, the scientific explanations are highly technical. But what has been known for centuries is that light speeds healing. Once upon a time, ill patients from infectious disease units and TB wards were rolled out into sunlight daily. Wounds that failed to heal were also exposed to sunlight.

From a simple perspective though, we know that light energy is simply clusters of photons or energy particles that can penetrate tissue at selected depths.

We also know that various wavelengths of light can then have specific effects. The most important effect that may have a bearing on peripheral neuropathy and related conditions is the ability to stimulate metabolism, or cellular efficiency.

You see, all the work we have done in the treatment of peripheral neuropathy since 2008 has been focused upon improving cell energy. This also of course includes diet, exercise and certain other compounds found in nature such as amino acids, carnitine, and lipoic acid.

You probably also know we’ve extensively used electrotherapy via the NDGen® Neurostimulator.

With the combination of laser, both in clinic and at home with the Wearable Laser you see below, we are now able to expand our reach and help more patients than ever before with LLLT effective pain and neuropathy treatment.

Although the research is early, it is extraordinarily encouraging. Talk to our team about possibly adding light therapy to your treatment. Consider this especially if you suffer from diabetic neuropathy or other poor wound-healing complications.

Doctor, what is the VERY first step?

Many patients from around the world contact us every day and ask my husband, “Doctor, what is the VERY first step to help me get back on the road to better health?”

Well, the ND Diet Plan has GOT to be a mainstay. You can even have a copy of that FREE on our website or with your order!

But as you already know, diet alone is just one step. Most patients we consult with really need a comprehensive health recovery plan, and that’s why we invented the Metabolic Support Formula.

This is a high potency broad spectrum multi-vitamin/mineral and trace element formula that provides the highest nutritional value for all systems of the body.

You probably have recently read about poor quality store bought supplements and why not only they may not be helpful but harmful!

Many patients tell us they were buying formulas costing more than twice what a month’s supply of Metabolic Support Formula could bring you!

This is a bioavailable, gentle formula that is well tolerated by most and now shipped world-wide.

One of the MOST Comprehensive Multi Nutrient Supplements Ever Formulated the ND Metabolic Support Formula also Contains Calcium and Magnesium in citrate/malate form for better absorption.

We also added 1000 IU of Vitamin D, 400 IU of Vitamin E, Significant B-12 and Folate as bio-available Metafolin(R) and Sooooo many more micro nutrients MISSING from most every other nutrient formula.

At just $1.46/day this formula could very well help yourself get back on the road to health today!

What About Turmeric?

Turmeric  is a spice derived from the roots of the plant Curcurma longa. Curcurma is a flowering plant related to Ginger. It is used in cooking in some cultures and has been used for it’s medicinal properties as well. We have used a combination of Turmeric as a supplement with enzymes both to aid digestion but also as an anti-inflammatory aid in pain and neuropathy patients for some time.

In practice, our usage is empirical meaning if it seems to help and does not cause significant side effects it’s something else that may enhance pain and neuropathy care. And as you’ll read, we also use it as a digestive aid with enzymes.

Turmeric is a major component in curry powder. As you may know, some incredibly fun and healthy foods are made using curry. Just like too much curry can cause belly issues so can too much turmeric.

What Are The Possible Health Effects of Turmeric?
Here is some data from NCCIH

  • Claims that curcuminoids found in turmeric help to reduce inflammation aren’t supported by strong studies.
  • Preliminary studies found that curcuminoids may
    • Reduce the number of heart attacks bypass patients had after surgery
    • Control knee pain from osteoarthritis as well as ibuprofen did
    • Reduce the skin irritation that often occurs after radiation treatments for breast cancer.
  • Other preliminary studies in people have looked at curcumin, a type of curcuminoid, for different cancers, colitis, diabetes, surgical pain, and as an ingredient in mouthwash for reducing plaque.
  • The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) has studied curcumin for Alzheimer’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and prostate and colon cancer.Cognitune.com is another great resource we really like for more information on turmeric curcurmin benefits too.  Check it out and I’m sure you’ll agree. One final caution. Don’t mix supplements of any kind with drugs as so little is known about potential interactions. As always, be sure your physicians know what for, and why you may be using turmeric, cucurmin or any supplement or diets. Here is the Phyto-Curcurmin we have used for years in pain and neuropathy patients, and also as a digestive aid  with great results.Let us know your experience in Reception Room or here on Facebook!

Acidophilus Can Make or Break Your Health

Making a statement like acidophilus can make or break your health may sound like a pretty powerful declaration, but it’s a true one. Many of you may wonder, “what in the world do you mean by that?” Here’s the answer.

Our bodies are so dependent on hidden functions that we learn to take them for granted. The stomach or gut, as it is often called, is a hidden wonderland of protective mechanisms. The lining of the gut contains millions of neurons (nerve cells). As one of the powerhouse neuronal organs of the body it’s no wonder so much is affected when it gets out of whack. When this portion of the body gets out of sync, chaos can ensue.

For instance, the common lifestyle of this day and age is all about stress and hurry. We eat poorly, don’t rest enough and always think we must be doing more, more, more. This type of lifestyle eventually takes a harsh toll on the body. Once this degradation begins, the next step is problems begin to ensue.

Specifically, when the enteric nervous system (gut neurons) gets messed up due to our bad habits, here are just a few things that can begin to be affected.

  • Poor moods, depression, anxiety
  • Poor bowel functions – leads to increased toxins and build up. This then leads to malfunctions of just about every part of the body.
  • Immune problems and increased susceptibility to other invaders

So, what can we do about it?

How Can Acidophilus Help Gut Health?

In the last couple of decades, stories of probiotics of varying types have been used and abused by the popular markets. The premise is good on which they stand, but the message and the why are not always as forthcoming.

Probiotics, of which acidophilus is one, are not magic pills. Though they can have great impact when taken for specific repair, they can’t fix everything.

The most commonly studied and tested probiotics are Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus. FOS or fructooligosaccharides, are also used in probiotic to promote fermentation. Now finding supplements that can provide all these benefits is what makes research fun.

Instead of searching the world over, our team here at NeuropathyDR decided to create an acidophilus combination that is second to none. With our acidophilus/bifidobacter/FOS combination, you can rest assured you are getting the right probiotics in the correct doses to help reestablish a healthy gut flora. This results in a happy gut and a happy gut is a happy you.

You can check out our acidophilus supplement here.

Also, please join us over on Facebook and let us know how it helps. We can’t wait to hear!

Treatment System

One of the most frustrating things for patients and doctors alike is not having adequate treatment plans for patients who suffer from peripheral neuropathy and chronic pain. We find most of the time with our new patients there has never been a real treatment system put into place.

When a piecemeal approach is taken both by patients and their professionals early on, and the net result is failure, or possibly worsening of the underlying neuropathy and chronic pain. Commonly this is the result of a number of factors and too often it’s failure to follow up on early milder issues.

But the good news is when specific formulas are followed, you know what to expect, and we then can know how to measure your progress.

For example, most patients who suffer from diabetic neuropathy know when they keep their blood sugars within a healthy range, their neuropathy and chronic pain improves.

Conversely, when blood sugars are out of control, most often due to poor diet the net result is poor.

And the same holds true for other many other health issues. For example having a personal treatment system including scheduled exercise, a firm diet plan (Get Yours HERE) as well as daily stretching and rest can make a profound difference.

The timing of dietary supplements, and even medications can make a big difference. We know for example that regularity, in terms of time of day and spacing of dosages can make a huge difference for many patients.

We also know that when treating with the NDGen treatment system at specific times makes a huge difference and leads to bigger improvements in quality of life.

So if you find yourself not progressing as much as you would like, let us help you develop a real treatment system or “game plan” for yourself.

Remember no two patients are the same. Some trial and error is necessary to find out what works best for you.

But the good news is having a treatment system to follow provides for more measurable results!

3 Pieces of Better Health

Can it really be this easy? Are there really just 3 pieces of better health? The answer is a resounding yes!

Too often, like so many things we tend to make health and even treatment of certain illnesses more complicated than they need to be. As a regular reader of our materials you understand some of this already but let’s try to put it all together today in a simple fashion.

The first piece of the 3 Pieces of Better Health, in fact the mainstay of better health and yes recovery from illness has got to be diet. A plant based Mediterranean type diet. This diet with very limited, to no animal products, plenty of healthy fats like olive and fish oil and little to no refined sugars is not only perhaps the healthiest diet but also quite likely the best for our brains and nervous systems or what we doctors call neuro-protective. So this has got to be your first priority. If you need a refresher, get your ND Diet Plan HERE

There’s no question no matter where you are that physical activity is paramount to your wellness and recovery from any illness. In fact, simply start where you are! If you’re recovering from surgery for example, use that wheelchair or walker as much as you possibly can. If you are completely mobile, walk whenever you can and in fact avoid sitting for more than 20 minutes maximum any given time. Believe or not these deliberate but simple physical activities when done consistently during our day probably do more for blood flow and strength than any other single thing you can do throughout the day. This includes going to the gym in the morning and then sitting all day on the job or at home.

Finally, so much as the written about mindset and health. Make no mistake about it your attitude, your support system, your interaction with family and those you love go a long way towards ensuring you have this third but key piece of better health. And no it’s not without demanding your own needs are met. Add in daily meditation, regular thought provoking reading and simple downtime and you literally have a lifelong winning combination.

We’ll talk much more about the key chronic pain and neuropathy treatment pieces next time and as you’ll see these 3 pieces of better health slide right in a critical way.

Finally, please don’t make your life or health plan more complicated than it is!

Just think of all the time, money and energy you’ll save by simply becoming self sufficient with your shopping and diet, exercising at home and daily mindset & self-care!

Easy Home Tidiness Habits To Help You Reduce Stress

Coming home to a messy or cluttered house at the end of a long work day is not conducive to relaxation. It’s that simple. Stress over time can be devastating to our health, so it is important to make our homes into places of peace, a refuge from the cares of the outside world. Keeping your home tidy is an easy way to decrease stress.

Benefits of Reducing Stress

It’s no secret that stress is bad for our health. Not only can it lead to heart problems, there have been suggested links to cancer and dementia as well. Putting some time aside each day to relax, to have a peaceful space where you can let go of your worries, may aid your physical health. You may help reduce your risk of high blood pressure or even heart attacks if you take time to relax. Stress can impair memory and your ability to learn, and, as mentioned, may be a factor in the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Aside from physical benefits, you may simply feel happier if you consciously choose to unwind each day. Stress may trigger relapses in depression and can lead to the buildup of cortisol, which can dampen the brain’s ability to produce serotonin and dopamine. Overall, it’s a good idea to make sure you have a space you can relax in every single day. Cleaning your home and making sure it is organized can help to create that environment.

Organization Practices

Part of keeping your home tidy and stress-free is having a good organization system in place. Lazy Susans can be used in more places than the kitchen cupboard. Clear up counter space in your bathroom by putting your lotions, face creams, toothpaste, or whatever you use daily on a lazy Susan to give you easy access and keep counters from being cluttered. Organize your linen closet by keeping sheets neat and folded together inside a pillow case. Add hooks or shelves to your bedroom to make sure you don’t leave jackets lying on floors, and books or purses askew on the bedside table.

Focus on the Bedroom

If you focus on creating a relaxing environment in one room, make it your bedroom. This should be your sanctuary from the rest of the world. Keep your chest of drawers tidy by using dividers so your clothes won’t be mixed and messy. Using multiple waste bins around the room can keep floors clear. If you are tight on space, you can transform your headboard into shelving, which can double as a nightstand as well. Whatever you do, make sure you keep your room feeling light and as stress-free as possible. This is the place you sleep, perhaps meditate, and should be a place of calm serenity. Adding scented candles in your preferred fragrance or using warmed oils can aid in relaxation. Hang soothing art and use light fixtures that make you feel at home in your bedroom.

A Home for Everything

It’s so easy, especially after having a long, tiring day, to strip your work day away when you get home. Your keys may go on the table and your shoes may wind up beneath the couch. Your purse may lie on the kitchen counter, and your jacket may end up half on a chair, half on the floor. This clutter can make a space, especially a small one, feel claustrophobic. Take fifteen minutes to assign “homes” for your high-use items. Make it a ritual to put things in their place right when you get home. Having a clear space with tidy walkways not only makes being home easier, but it feels like a breath of fresh air.

Your home should not add to anxiety or the stresses in your life. It should be your refuge and be somewhere you can safely unwind. By making little changes, you can ensure that your house is the perfect place to relax at the end of each day.
